What are you reading right now?

899169_82381922.jpgI always have a pile of books to read. Some are books I’ve bought, others are from the library. Add to this newspapers and magazines and hundreds of websites, it can all get overwhelming.

Last year, I read so much that I was sure I had read more than a hundred books. Just for fun, I made a list. The results surprised me.

In 2007, with all the pages I thought I turned, I ended up reading a mere 31 or so books. There went the idea that I read a 100 books a year. I dug through old blog posts and diary entries and came up with some sort of list for previous years as well. You can see my ‘Books Read’ list from 2004 - till date here.

Keeping a list of books you’ve read can be a very interesting exercise. It reveals to you the choices you’ve made at different points of your life. In 2004, I read a lot of business and HR related books. That’s because everybody around me, at work, was reading the same. Since I’ve moved out from that corporate environment, I’ve found a great deal more variety in my reading.

I’ve begun to read more poetry. That can be attributed to having a calmer life than before, and to the prolific collection at my local library. And because I’m in the writing industry, I buy or borrow a lot of books on the subject now.

The books you read chart your life. Just for fun, keep a list. See what you discover.

I don’t have a reading list like that. But, I have a “virtual library” with all the books I buy. I’m sure it’s possible to sort it by date and see the trends.
Unfortunately, due to lack of time, this past year I dropped from an average of 60+ to 30+ books. Have to start catching up…
