I seem to be reading a lot of writing related books lately - which can only be a good thing. The Writer’s Digest Handbook of Magazine Article Writing is one I recommend that you buy and keep with you till you become a famous magazine writer. It’s good. Really.
If you are a new writer, you will find the detailed information in this book illuminating. Experienced writers will pick up on the ideas and tips helpfully given - take notes, people.
The book is divided into eleven chapters. Chapters 1-4 focus on the basics: Finding Ideas, Querying, Selling Reprints and Finding Markets. I found lots of ideas and hints from magazine editors (which are subject to change with changes in the masthead, but still, a good beginning). Again, keep that notebook handy. This is the section where you’re likely to use it a lot.
Chapters 5-7 are about the details: Researching (finding experts, tackling any topic), Interviewing (strategies, conducting an interview, e-interviews), and Avoiding Problems (plagiarism, libel).
In Chapters 8-11, the book explains Writing Techniques such as using an overview, anecdotes, ending your article and writing for the digital media. An important section on How to write Common Articles focuses on profiles, service journalism, fillers and writing for children’s magazines. If you’re a magazine writer ‘common’ articles are likely to be a big part of your writing, so this is very useful information.
The last two chapters of the book tell you about the business of writing - the fine print, finances, taxes and contract negotiations. There is a chapter on Working with an Editor, which I found useful .
I’ve read the book once through. I’m re-reading it again armed with a notebook for more detailed notes. That’s always a sign that the book has more value that being just a good read. If you’re looking for information on how to write for magazines, the Handbook of Magazine Article Writing is a good place to start.
