Think your life is boring? Think again.
What may be mundane to you might be exciting for other readers. Mine your life. Here are some things to ponder:
- Where have you lived? Good travel writing often comes from the locals. Having lived in a place, you will have a different sense of perspective from that of a tourist. You will know local secrets and hideouts, places on the tourist map that you wouldn’t recommend or new developments that you can write about before it becomes public knowledge.
- What jobs have you worked in? Whether you’ve worked behind a desk or have had a more glamorous life, you will know more about your present/past occupation than someone looking in from the outside. Career and business related advice is in demand, as are real-life case studies.
- What are you good at? Do you like painting, golfing, decorating , even as a hobby? Ask yourself what you think you are good at. Chances are that there are many people (and publications) who would be interested in your (amateur) point of view.
- What do you know? Using the same principle as ‘What are you good at?’, list the things that you know for sure. Perhaps you know how to repair a computer, or bake a fantastic pie. What do you do that makes people say, “Wow, I wish I could do that.” Why not write a How-to article and share your expertise?
- What do you love? I love books, reading, writing and computers. Naturally, I end up writing a lot about these subjects. I also feel passionate about certain topics - these tend to be upper most in my mind when it comes to pitching ideas or writing. What do you love? Write about those issues; the honesty and passion will show through.
- Got something on your mind? You may have questions about issues in your life. Use the writer’s hat to find your answers. Is your baby keeping you awake? Or your spouse is spending far too much? Or perhaps you want to know what impact climate change will have on your garden. Don’t just ponder about those seemingly unanswerable questions - ask the experts!
Ideas abound everywhere. You just have to look hard enough and imagine that other people will find your life (and everything you enjoy) of interest as well.
