Finding markets is often the most time consuming aspect of a freelance writers job. Ploughing through Writers’ Market or similar tomes used to be the only avenue. That was until the Internet made it possible to find everything at your fingertips without spending a small fortune.
Here are some ways that writers can locate calls for submissions and new markets online:
1. Paid listings: Subscribe to a paid listing site and you’ll get detailed, (usually) up to date listings. My personal favourite is Write This Moment which has weekly updates from periodicals, including fillers, staff jobs and editorial news.
2. Using search engines : Google (and similar engines) is your best friend when it comes to finding writing markets. A simple search will return thousands of useful links. If you’re looking for results for a particular genre, save yourself some time and do an advanced search. For example, if you are looking for parenting markets, search for “”writers guidelines” and parenting. Adding “per word” to the query will give you listings where pay is mentioned.
3. Most writings blogs and websites have regularly updated free listings. Subscribe to as many as you can!
Submit to Social Networks (digg, stumble upon, del.icio.us, ...)
