Beach Road by James Patterson with Peter De Jonge

I’m a huge James Patterson fan. His thrillers are fast paced, stocked with believable characters and are consistent across books. Which is why the ‘Beach Road’ was a bit of a disappointment.

The book is set in East Hampton, summer home to billionaires and Hollywood royalty. Tom Dunleavy has a one-man law firm with barely any business. All that changes when one of his friends, a local star basketball player, is arrested for a triple murder near a movie star’s house. Tom knows that Dante Halleyville is innocent, and jumps at the chance at defending him at what could be the biggest case of his life.

Tom asks Kate Costello, a Manhattan super-lawyer to help him with the case. Kate is Tom’s ex-girlfriend and it is not an easy job to get her on board, but she relents and takes up the challenge. As the days progress towards the trial, the case develops rapidly, with more murders, crooked cops and a blossoming love. As they say, the plot thickens.

Discovering who the murderer is does come as a surprise. It is not who one expected, of course. The book should have ideally ended somewhere there. Instead the last page is quite tame compared to the action in the preceding pages. The ending, in my opinion, was not good enough to carry Patterson’s name.

Made me wonder if it was ghost-written.

If you are a Patterson fan, read the book. I,however, wouldn’t re-read this one. Give me the older ones any day.

I’m a big Patterson fan, and this one was in my to-buy list.

So, is it worth it to get it soon or should I push it to the end of the list?

I got my copy from the library :) I wouldn’t buy it for keeps, no. I’ve got most of his other books, but this one just didn’t feel like him.

If you can borrow the book that would be great. In my opinion, it is just NOT one of his good books!
